Texture Tool Freebies!

Hey Science Friends,

I have been searching high and low for something to help my children learn to describe the properties of objects with some emphasis on texture. I finally came up with something that serves as a tool, is easy to make and helps young children describe an object by texture. I created the printable above so that I could print, cut and laminate a copy to glue on both side of a fly swatter. As a class we will collect small items that we will glue to each finger and we will label it according to the texture. We will make several and all of these will have different textures on them. I am planning on making several of these so that my Science Teams have a texture tool to use at each table when investigating. I hope we can find enough items to make at least four texture tools. When we finish making them I will post them here. If you would like to make your own texture tool just click on the image above and grab your copy and get ready to start investigating!

My Five Senses Safety Rules!

Hey Science Friends,
We are gearing up for a year of Science Investigations and having a lot of discussion about safety. These My Five Senses Safety Rules were inspired by my class as we were creating an anchor chart about safety. I have made a small version so we could keep in our Science Center and keep posted all year as we investigate. As with any chart we make in class, it might be modified and changed throughout the year as we gain new understandings or discover something we might not have included previously. If you need a copy to jump start your Safety discussions please click on the image and grab yours today! And have fun investigating!

Shout Out!

Hello Science Friends,
I am so excited and I mean I am really excited. I just opened a letter from Pets in the Classroom and found out that I was awarded a grant for pets in my classroom. You really can't understand just how happy this makes me. I had a few pet fatalities last year and I was wondering if I was going to have pets in my classroom again. My kids really enjoyed pets last year and so did I. I was kind of depressed when the animals that we came to love passed.

You would not think small animals would have a big impact on a classroom environment but they do! We would open our door in the morning and we would all gather around our pets and see what they had been up to. We would talk about what they needed and take care of them for a few minutes and then start our day. My set up was kind of neat because both of my aquariums and a light up paper moon were on a tap switch so one tap and all the lights would come on and we could see what was going on. Last year I had a spot for my pets in a tucked away corner of my room under a big paper tree. I had planned on keeping the set up the same and left it up for the summer. I came back to a room with a broken window and it had rained inside my classroom and damaged the decorations in my Science center. At first I was upset because I thought it was all ready to go for the new year. After I thought about it for a while I decided I would try something completely different this year.

I am still working on my Science center even after school has started and I am finally ok with that. I have had the chance to really think about it and plan for each inch of space. I always wanted a dedicated space for Science and every other subject too but I realize that Science can happen anywhere and we investigate everywhere so with that thought in mind my Science center does not have to to be big. I just want a place or space to hold my materials and to foster independence with Science materials. And now I need some space for my pets! This time around I want my pets to be front and center.

I am so excited to be able to go and get new pets. I am already making a list of the things I am going to get. I am hoping and hoping when I get to Petsmart that they will have the LED light aquarium that I saw online, the glow rocks and the cutest little live aqua frogs for two dollars. I have to wait until the weekend for my pet shopping. Oh how I wish it were Friday right now! If you need some critters in your classroom you should consider checking out Pets In The Classroom!

My Five Senses!

Hello Science Friends,
I really never intended for it to take so long for me to post at the beginning of the year. I have been super busy and I have had my share of technology issues. I wanted to stop by and thank you for hanging in there with me. I am excited about getting back into the regular routine and talking about Science! We are just about to gear up for a unit on My Five Senses. I think this unit is one of my favorites. In my stores this has been my most popular item so I guess everyone loves My five Senses too!

As I was preparing for Science this year I was thinking about the My Five Senses unit and I still had a few items on my own wish list for this unit. I finally decided to create the items that I was always on the hunt for. I have updated this file to include these new items:

I Can Be A Scientist Teacher Big Book Color Version
I Can Be A Super Scientist Notebook/Journal Cover and Inserts
Roll A Sense Game
My Five Senses Song/Poem
I Can Be A Scientist Labeled Poster Boy/Girl
Label the Super Scientist Boy/Girl Blacklines
My Five Senses Blackline Reader

These were just a few of the things I wished I had in the past. I am super excited about the edition of the small blackline books that will just be perfect for book boxes or Science folders. I am also excited about the I Can Be A Scientist Colored Teacher Big Book that I am going to use when talking about each sense and I will add a copy to our library. And I am jumping for joy over the I Can Be A Super Scientist Notebook/Journal Cover and Inserts that is literally a click, print and staple away from a My Five Senses Notebook or Journal for each child in your Science Class.

And I am excited to get investigating with the Investigation Mats that were already included in the original download. I am getting excited to see some budding young Scientists this year. I would love to include more so if you have an idea that I can include I hope you email me and let me know. But make sure that if you purchased this from TeacherspayTeachers that you look for your notification to redownload the new copy so you get all the new stuff because you will just squeal when you see the graphics for these!

And usually when we are working on something in class it is the children who usually spark me to add something new to each unit. If I add something I will send you notification through the store and I will post it here. I have had so many emails about Science with young children. I am excited to be able to share that with you here this year!

If you purchased this item from Teachers Notebook I will notify you of the update...I am unable to update that file right now and I have emailed them for help! I appreciate your understanding!

Product Update!

Hello Science Friends,
I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I am still working on emails and feedback but due to a severe storm and some house damage and power outage I am a little behind. I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you purchased the My Five Senses unit I wanted to let you know that it has been updated in my TeacherspayTeachers store. It is just a slight modification of one word. Check your notifications to redownload the product. My sale continues through today because I was anticipating it might be hard to get through TpT.
