<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,<br />
This Weather Wednesday was all about fall. I was looking forward to it considering the school hallways and walls are being filled with all things fall. One of my favorites has always been fall tree projects. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9tzpwLwN7Hjiry53OmV2lBwU2m9rnV5jwKqp0b6HA9XyWA-ryHt0MsuB2vvHBhZu6h5qBXu-d-4HTRiR-vnNLszbZ31zlvnxJJEYWsattCLdw-r77BzHzivK2qYM17s79huwsG7__mHUv/s1600/Tree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9tzpwLwN7Hjiry53OmV2lBwU2m9rnV5jwKqp0b6HA9XyWA-ryHt0MsuB2vvHBhZu6h5qBXu-d-4HTRiR-vnNLszbZ31zlvnxJJEYWsattCLdw-r77BzHzivK2qYM17s79huwsG7__mHUv/s640/Tree.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
These two fall trees were made by our fabulous art teacher Mrs. Lane and served as such an inspiration for what we did in class.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5srcfh3b8ZD_1wJQ395FF6ESPqPMncOjCfoagcuH_IQYJ45QjkrKvL9i59TTg0Qty9iuBgdTGjZ2hTajOWz9XNfQTUlzVyx2f9K-fkAMvVpr-7nxCRIFhDgZne4PZjWRYp9RriqZXjGQp/s1600/Tree+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5srcfh3b8ZD_1wJQ395FF6ESPqPMncOjCfoagcuH_IQYJ45QjkrKvL9i59TTg0Qty9iuBgdTGjZ2hTajOWz9XNfQTUlzVyx2f9K-fkAMvVpr-7nxCRIFhDgZne4PZjWRYp9RriqZXjGQp/s640/Tree+.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
As you can clearly see fall is all around me! I really wanted something to create after our discussion about the seasons. So, we decided on simple torn paper trees because we had plenty of paper on hand and we knew this would be just the thing to kick off thinking about all things fall.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzm9Sx_QwdBl-gPScETUb4ywzYkPlP7zsmDtL6QHYGNbsX0Zod_dlI7faOKyb-fVdh-n4ptGUcmJibT6IqqndlcUMKm7Xv4tU5ckKR_Ru0sANtWE4BxLURPvO_QYfjx_8ock-LH_XxmJ64/s1600/Torn+Trees+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="497" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzm9Sx_QwdBl-gPScETUb4ywzYkPlP7zsmDtL6QHYGNbsX0Zod_dlI7faOKyb-fVdh-n4ptGUcmJibT6IqqndlcUMKm7Xv4tU5ckKR_Ru0sANtWE4BxLURPvO_QYfjx_8ock-LH_XxmJ64/s640/Torn+Trees+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And the kids had a great time making the leaves. We had plenty to work with in no time. With a little classical music playing in the background I am willing to say it was a peaceful ending to a perfect day. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,<br />
We have been busy working on describing properties of objects. We have been learning to describe objects by shape, size, mass, texture and color. We spent several sessions learning how to do this investigation independently. Our goal is to be able to observe, describe and record properties of objects. In the beginning of our investigations we observed and described objects by just one property. We would pick an object, pass it around and describe it by that property. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpU4LZqTKd7UB3EepLIWcgldsfMDAumDa15eKoXHpRwQVGbeV2usaBrCA2LXjN7P6LcK32jXJ8iP0vLRmpebKE15nWnEWedNk3qhDEbN6kjwTiwUh_uP_wBAizc3h5ZjHLEEQZv_VgrkWZ/s1600/Is+It+Red.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpU4LZqTKd7UB3EepLIWcgldsfMDAumDa15eKoXHpRwQVGbeV2usaBrCA2LXjN7P6LcK32jXJ8iP0vLRmpebKE15nWnEWedNk3qhDEbN6kjwTiwUh_uP_wBAizc3h5ZjHLEEQZv_VgrkWZ/s320/Is+It+Red.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Books by Tana Hoban helped us understand how to describe an object by one specific property. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVmGlG_5rTOV2jrhrX7VLHRkTSVA1_egFU7RkPg8uneQjRGGcHARb9J4WfxuPspjQn3y8cVMkJscGMgBS6gFTWMBZnO2ykFlZ56QiGqqlEo8MP0KLoJi026lobJE1vmOJw7LgR5zXBj8q5/s1600/Is+It+Rough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVmGlG_5rTOV2jrhrX7VLHRkTSVA1_egFU7RkPg8uneQjRGGcHARb9J4WfxuPspjQn3y8cVMkJscGMgBS6gFTWMBZnO2ykFlZ56QiGqqlEo8MP0KLoJi026lobJE1vmOJw7LgR5zXBj8q5/s320/Is+It+Rough.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The books are filled with pictures that help young children understand the concept. These are great books to elicit a lot of communication and discussion. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We previously had picked a classroom object to use as an object of comparison when talking about mass. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Going on object hunts for our independent investigations was fun because it got us up and moving around before we sat down to independently investigate. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Welcome Science Friends,<br />
We have had a great week learning about our senses as tools for investigation. I think that our Science Notebooks just might be our favorite tools in science so far. Once the labels were put on our notebooks and safety contracts were signed and glued inside, I think we all felt like official scientists just ready for our first hands-on investigation. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXhKUffNQQRHDPaCqsjfby3vOBLuVMQ8e1Yu8XoHH3l_JW6cxSMk_IwiEDZq1jgkYyO7vGmk3sz3-NcqJcFxqRntXNGaUqNy-_MEe1bCNZPEg7QC2B4dJPpDXbTXArqkAJMI8j8Wv0D-lk/s1600/My+Five+Senses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXhKUffNQQRHDPaCqsjfby3vOBLuVMQ8e1Yu8XoHH3l_JW6cxSMk_IwiEDZq1jgkYyO7vGmk3sz3-NcqJcFxqRntXNGaUqNy-_MEe1bCNZPEg7QC2B4dJPpDXbTXArqkAJMI8j8Wv0D-lk/s1600/My+Five+Senses.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We were looking forward to the end of the week because we knew that on Friday we would be investigating bubblegum, Not only were we going to be able to practice safe investigations but we were able to use all of our senses to investigate bubblegum.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnZegqj4Iel8q72ZIm_FBoMA4TJQzYIXBR8TXRCeA8nYha15Zxv8Frvg0TXP7zcDBlJyVMDjIDH9XL_JpjRYjXTp3KSEOS-6VgGXFR0fmRx7ZM0Ir-T-o3jL6zce7qOWmjO9xVsK-kIibo/s1600/dubble_bubble_assorted_loose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnZegqj4Iel8q72ZIm_FBoMA4TJQzYIXBR8TXRCeA8nYha15Zxv8Frvg0TXP7zcDBlJyVMDjIDH9XL_JpjRYjXTp3KSEOS-6VgGXFR0fmRx7ZM0Ir-T-o3jL6zce7qOWmjO9xVsK-kIibo/s400/dubble_bubble_assorted_loose.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was surprised at how well everyone listened as I walked through the process of recording our findings for the first time. I thought it might be a struggle considering everyone knew we were going to really investigate bubblegum with all of our senses. To my surprise, the children were listening and answering questions as I went through it step by step. We recorded what our bubblegum looked like, smelled like, tasted like, felt like and sounded like. We learned how scientists "waft" a scent safely and came up with some pretty good descriptions of what our bubblegum smelled like. And we were not sure if our bubblegum would actually taste like what we thought. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtRYW9Ovt2jbN4Js7LIvCjPE60hf4urnR3kiwb7fsXlVAjZ0Fyy7uJMy__-hWSGpaDqvy7s6QiyuSXkMQR4F1dMdLlg2BvPs-Noi75VOgnfaxniChFJOwZgt7a9OkHZyE74XC59t6NvDJN/s1600/My+Five+Senses+Pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtRYW9Ovt2jbN4Js7LIvCjPE60hf4urnR3kiwb7fsXlVAjZ0Fyy7uJMy__-hWSGpaDqvy7s6QiyuSXkMQR4F1dMdLlg2BvPs-Noi75VOgnfaxniChFJOwZgt7a9OkHZyE74XC59t6NvDJN/s400/My+Five+Senses+Pic.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did have to help with the recordings and thought everyone did a great job for the first time out and for so early in the year. As we ended the day the children were excited and pretty quiet with gum in their mouth! We are all looking forward to more investigations in the coming weeks. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As part of our Science standards we describe properties of objects. Setting up this investigation can really be pretty simple. You do not need any expensive materials and you can keep this investigation going all year long. After some guided practice and a little gradual release, you will find that this can be one of the best independent investigations to have around. What I love is that a simple nature walk can provide enough materials for several investigations. Add in a hand lens and your kids will begin to discover their inner scientist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfN0rL8KOPlXC17lRpzoa5W1FuUF_RGeG0flHG27ukMZlMrUQdE-J2yEMMUTbEPb8AQyAvrf0wyUDGbIdK50ONw4K04h5SQnzpFzVnCkQX-0PwsrZ2hXEmgKncyR-gvfcthpTFZRH7kKQB/s1600/Rock+Inventory.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfN0rL8KOPlXC17lRpzoa5W1FuUF_RGeG0flHG27ukMZlMrUQdE-J2yEMMUTbEPb8AQyAvrf0wyUDGbIdK50ONw4K04h5SQnzpFzVnCkQX-0PwsrZ2hXEmgKncyR-gvfcthpTFZRH7kKQB/s640/Rock+Inventory.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After the investigation and inventory, your scientists will be ready to report their findings to the class. You can even have fun with this for Science Show and Tell! A perfect way for them to have some fun at home finding the perfect object to bring in and investigate. To set this up for independent investigations all you need is a box, hand lens, clipboard, copies of the inventory and objects. It just can't get easier than that!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is that time of year that has us dreaming of sunny summer days as we learn about plant parts and life cycles. No unit could be complete without taking a closer look at sunflowers. What is it about sunflowers that we all love so much? My class thinks it is the color that we love so much and it makes us feel happy. Another thing my class has loved this year has been notebooking. They ask me before going to PE if we are going to use our Science Notebooks in science each afternoon. They love it if we cut and glue something in but also love illustrating what we have learned. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvtImrhS8aS1Hky8E2KLKXakmxQXwtVYN2Fo5x6nziessLTWFvEdscg8_G32xRTPM-8zpAzWa6voM-Q8JzwrJLFARt7URXlK4T3ajuelJ0afv8g5Rgpdf9Jk6yavXyj4ISsJRa19U7lT97/s1600/Sunflower+Notebooking+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvtImrhS8aS1Hky8E2KLKXakmxQXwtVYN2Fo5x6nziessLTWFvEdscg8_G32xRTPM-8zpAzWa6voM-Q8JzwrJLFARt7URXlK4T3ajuelJ0afv8g5Rgpdf9Jk6yavXyj4ISsJRa19U7lT97/s320/Sunflower+Notebooking+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our notebooks are simple...just spiral notebooks. After trying out different notebooks over the years I always come back to simple spiral notebooks. I buy them in the summer when they are on sale. I used to worry if I would have enough to fill them up for the year but now I worry that I will have a second one for each child within a year! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1WeuxiRTvt93G2snnwEg0f5Ckk_MTtAA111mf23vXHZJdy-loZooPJKVpbXHQvWoUemxIgg-CmJ1kWrN39tkXQhZN8LZ6ZgsJ3q6r6YsbICiDN3DTLfjJj8VdDv1ivxTkQsS7pAdMWYln/s1600/This+is+the+Sunflower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1WeuxiRTvt93G2snnwEg0f5Ckk_MTtAA111mf23vXHZJdy-loZooPJKVpbXHQvWoUemxIgg-CmJ1kWrN39tkXQhZN8LZ6ZgsJ3q6r6YsbICiDN3DTLfjJj8VdDv1ivxTkQsS7pAdMWYln/s200/This+is+the+Sunflower.jpg" width="145" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With so many great books to read about sunflowers it is easy to keep the interest going. Our favorite this year was Sunflower House by Eve Bunting. I think it's my favorite every year because I just love her books so much. As I read the book this year, I got a little misty. I asked the kids if when I was reading it made them feel a little misty too. I really enjoyed hearing their responses. I wished I had had a text to self response sheet with me ready to go. Instead we all listened to each other and had a rich discussion. So many great connections were made with this story. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
We still have some fun stuff to do with sunflowers before the year is over. We are gearing up to go to visit a farm and we are preparing for that. We are hoping to see some sunflowers along the way. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am always on the hunt and lookout for the perfect book. You know the kind of book that can say and illustrate a concept that presents a concept that is easily understood by young learners. I am so fortunate that I work with teachers that not only share that passion but share it with me and share their books! This week we have been discussing living and nonliving and this book just added to that discussion. But what I love about the book the most is that it also lends to a discussion about offspring. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Do You Know Which Ones Will Grow?</span></i></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP4ywMoSyrNyPPpXSdJ9nxUaIGu9Tums8hTgNXAO7YMM0o-NOGnwz2Aq0jk1LzEVqy6IvAN_gg6l4xUF2AbAOX6IGhZ3wi5YQknTBE5rabC8FvXmgdHAz6KcAUoEp455RXghy1Rb9Zjey-/s400/Living+and+Non+.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our objective is to differentiate between living and nonliving things based on whether they have basic needs and produce offspring. I couldn't have been passed that book at a more perfect time because it not only added to our discussion but everyone was eager to share what they were thinking with each turn of the page. The book also gave us plenty of ideas to generate a great shared writing list and when it came time to notebook about it, we all had a lot to pull from. This year the children love notebooking in both math and science and if I tell them we are using our notebooks they are pretty excited and totally engaged.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIx-NSNvzQpCxzJunTktKFMZaOWVIVhotGthbD2MA_08b6h9ISy2FRpxJ5R9rsKfrpkOXUEgw9ekdxtDAmsdpocPYVyqNxKhMWK3P676w5oJ0mSVRKiMN-_Xt5YkyRAKD_srVEWEujnfvV/s400/Living+and+Non+2.jpg" width="351" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As we were just about to leave for the week someone took note of one of the last slides we had looked at and asked...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b><i>Is that seed living or nonliving? Is that a baby apple?</i></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This question gives us a great starting point for next week as we justify our thinking and discuss basic needs of plants and animals and examine evidence that living organisms have basic needs such as food, water and shelter for animals and air, water and nutrients, sunlight and space for plants. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB-7_3v5xNOFBhZ0OBK3gJpfdE7L2LpYsGgRHFpBT_vaWpWN0JqLUsmQxkgrF68oXQASD4OzSeB_sslh1XoNbk2V9na5Q2pdxqNdpl00tbheOSoT5zCrP6RI-8Dhub-BGSLiLHh4jwWs2q/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="320" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We used this PowerPoint about living and nonliving to help with our discussion and provide us with real world examples to discuss living and nonliving. Next week we will be justifying our thinking by posing the question...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">How do you know?</span></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am sure we will all have fun discussing our favorite living and nonliving things and sharing with each other how we know it is living or not! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What a great week we had and the end of the week had me excited for the next when a teacher friend brought me some books to look over. It made my day. I have looked the world over for appropriate books about graphs and never could find what I was looking for...<b><i>until now!</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtNCDRKP0nPxWN1TEuEohSg46HCBZRCSmA58K9ruGCoanJHc2hdVCqlz81NghRtoB8vsnX048E1IGSf3x2SK7s-_1x2Q28QITZFNkhmLk7qVR-gs6YkaH1OBNjnE5eRS65pB_cezJVgC5w/s1600/Pictographs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtNCDRKP0nPxWN1TEuEohSg46HCBZRCSmA58K9ruGCoanJHc2hdVCqlz81NghRtoB8vsnX048E1IGSf3x2SK7s-_1x2Q28QITZFNkhmLk7qVR-gs6YkaH1OBNjnE5eRS65pB_cezJVgC5w/s320/Pictographs.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Believe it or not, concept books are my favorite. They always have been. And these books came at the perfect time just as we are comparing numbers in math and looking at weather data in science. We have gotten so good we had to increase the quantities that we are comparing. And when those quantities get larger we need some helpful tools to organize it all...<b><i>graphs!</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDg1xeeawcyTtp5t7P9hztm6-7y0a0h4NobjXcyuRDDhvfsP-5gqPKoEqsbthmp7pG8J5_-mZapXtB3l-EnMjELw1yFLmlkDM5U_DPhicGvs_uAD7ZrjhsYpZG2Y5TnIgsUo2BtKRSC6uc/s1600/Bar+Graphs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDg1xeeawcyTtp5t7P9hztm6-7y0a0h4NobjXcyuRDDhvfsP-5gqPKoEqsbthmp7pG8J5_-mZapXtB3l-EnMjELw1yFLmlkDM5U_DPhicGvs_uAD7ZrjhsYpZG2Y5TnIgsUo2BtKRSC6uc/s320/Bar+Graphs.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are several in this series and you are going to want them all! There is just no way to get just one. I searched Amazon and was able to find all of the books in the series. What a thrill it was to put these books into my cart and know they will be at my doorstep within days. Just in time for me to look them over, take a few notes and plan how I am going to use them in class. And I will carry them to the library and beg my librarian to order them all because we <b><i>need</i></b> them there too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimWLAuekaDlvNiygGEFW-EwL1_owzkAvw7_OO5zRlCUJT1Tddf7SPi1YvrBbkOR1Jv8fD8a1eeBniW5JiG61BnSvkToiDwjy11g-oS3eGZfFcX7f6y6BjJ7lyXVA1JCcAJwCRC0xRB9YYa/s1600/Tally+Charts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimWLAuekaDlvNiygGEFW-EwL1_owzkAvw7_OO5zRlCUJT1Tddf7SPi1YvrBbkOR1Jv8fD8a1eeBniW5JiG61BnSvkToiDwjy11g-oS3eGZfFcX7f6y6BjJ7lyXVA1JCcAJwCRC0xRB9YYa/s320/Tally+Charts.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My kids already know that I read the same books to them more than once so I know that these books will be worth every penny to me. I read with a different purpose or focus. And another reason I had to have this set of books is because it has longevity. We can use these books all year long. And if I needed another reason I know I can use them for <b><i>math and science</i></b> and that just seals the deal for me. I feel like I hit the jackpot! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxyedhKi5mDWtOVKx7wW-Be3yvmtRCr_4WFg12B1HCNDicPepIpP-IWZMEd084eB8x-8T4POVqgP4hK_bTSCJA52N2KMeCrUxUuDQt5QYpD3jdTVjWcJFZkL2qI69s9wkW-qfHTr2hPCbh/s1600/Pie+Graphs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxyedhKi5mDWtOVKx7wW-Be3yvmtRCr_4WFg12B1HCNDicPepIpP-IWZMEd084eB8x-8T4POVqgP4hK_bTSCJA52N2KMeCrUxUuDQt5QYpD3jdTVjWcJFZkL2qI69s9wkW-qfHTr2hPCbh/s320/Pie+Graphs.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will spend time modeling, practicing and talking to the children about how to read these books independently even if they can't read all the words. The pictures are good enough to support some independent thinking when children browse these books. So, in the independent browsing bins these will go when I finish using them. Hey Science friends,</div>
<div align="center">
Well, I am linking up with my friends at <a href="http://freebie-licious.blogspot.com/2015/07/tell-us-about-you-tuesday_21.html">Freebielicious</a> for Tell Us About You Tuesday. And it's early Wednesday morning, go figure. You know what they say for some people the wee hours in the morning are the most productive. I am a night owl and that is the way I have always been. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am heading into my 16th year of teaching with a fresh and renewed mindset. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong><em><span style="color: red;">All of my career I have spent in Kindergarten which has been a true blessing for me.</span></em></strong> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I went to school and thought I would be a Science teacher because during my college years I truly recognized my love for the natural world and living things and I discovered the answers to many childhood questions I had about the world around me. In my last semester of college I took 27 hours <strong><em>just</em></strong> to take a kindergarten job that fell into my lap. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDPjiA5rbNjPLJ6Yx3ahyWjt0GvgyqPian-O41CKvFlDmnYyD0ZE4Q_4EqTOsilFJ8dAlC1Y6DB2_tocML_-VHCcZywDUB0Y31AB4yepoWgBH0s27BbM3uf6myi0eMXruZgCuobyXX1MDF/s1600/Texas+Presentation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDPjiA5rbNjPLJ6Yx3ahyWjt0GvgyqPian-O41CKvFlDmnYyD0ZE4Q_4EqTOsilFJ8dAlC1Y6DB2_tocML_-VHCcZywDUB0Y31AB4yepoWgBH0s27BbM3uf6myi0eMXruZgCuobyXX1MDF/s640/Texas+Presentation.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I live and teach deep in the heart of Texas. I have been here my whole life. Living in Texas my whole life, you would have thought that I had seen it all but that was not really the case until...one conversation kind of changed that all for me. Since I was a child I had always wanted to travel the back roads and see Texas! After sharing my childhood dream with my husband, it wasn't long before we hit the road! We hitched a little travel trailer and I swear we never looked back...<strong><em>not even once</em></strong>!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is safe to say I have had my share of lakeside picnics along the dusty dirt roads of Texas. This experience has given me a chance to play around with my love of photography that I always had brewing inside of me but never knew I had a real use for until teaching and blogging came into my life. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I now have a lot of memories and pictures to share with my class when we talk about Texas and natural resources which also comes in handy for writer's workshop.</div>

The sun was shinning so bright it was hard to tell what this picture would look like. I am sure there is a setting that I should have been using but balancing yourself on a kayak with a new camera this was my best shot. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well nothing really says summer like a sunflower! This week we ended our day putting together our sunny sunflowers. As we were working, I could hear a lot of science talk around the room. My pieces for the project were precut to save a little time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7ny7KLdRvEItyI2KI5odrHZVLz3HsoC6QSbys98GYZ8dAaiigfFJzc8gM1FR9s2GtRapfvDaLIIa1PVtx2FggrUOaZL5VMW4apF-lUVgkUNSl9ZiEkf6tVEeJv6eYQubnScsrG-ekBxUU/s1600/Sunflower+House.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7ny7KLdRvEItyI2KI5odrHZVLz3HsoC6QSbys98GYZ8dAaiigfFJzc8gM1FR9s2GtRapfvDaLIIa1PVtx2FggrUOaZL5VMW4apF-lUVgkUNSl9ZiEkf6tVEeJv6eYQubnScsrG-ekBxUU/s400/Sunflower+House.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are some of my favorite books about sunflowers that I have collected over the years. Any Eve Bunting book would surely be on my list. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitWYRr_P08tJBSGlDWOX_8OOQ4MU9btL58c7jpLHsjqcsBOBUQa-FtSyxaNoVbYjZWLNVHRDtlYAl8kHP8iseCwFdaJNc0WFWUxkt1JXObb0rDa62DXA5RbLrBrfJoILHVmhBnyVRqKCQt/s1600/This+is+the+Sunflower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitWYRr_P08tJBSGlDWOX_8OOQ4MU9btL58c7jpLHsjqcsBOBUQa-FtSyxaNoVbYjZWLNVHRDtlYAl8kHP8iseCwFdaJNc0WFWUxkt1JXObb0rDa62DXA5RbLrBrfJoILHVmhBnyVRqKCQt/s320/This+is+the+Sunflower.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When reading, This Is The Sunflower, we talked a lot about seeds. My class was really interested in seed dispersal this year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this book two years ago and have used it each year since I discovered it, This is a good one to integrate some process art into a plant unit. We read the book and do a little internet research and look at some of the paintings. Once we have seen some of the artwork we begin talking about the different elements in the paintings that we have viewed. We will end up with artist inspired sunflower paintings before it is all said and done. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Everyone is always surprised at how easy these actually are to create. Just a little paper, pencil, crayon and watercolors are all you need. These are the "go to" projects we work on when we finish our other work. </div>
<div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh16Fumre3xwcjqTPZm2UnqFb_P5_ue7PFfsWUJ4-XZwONz2cQaQSvHWzlUs54wLivurB_0cqOX1B2UXiR6XwuRWTvDg7KjsqhwOPW6s8w5epKiK4dqW35CKeQ2y6Tp5p05nLErP9UEp7TO/s1600/Sunflower+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh16Fumre3xwcjqTPZm2UnqFb_P5_ue7PFfsWUJ4-XZwONz2cQaQSvHWzlUs54wLivurB_0cqOX1B2UXiR6XwuRWTvDg7KjsqhwOPW6s8w5epKiK4dqW35CKeQ2y6Tp5p05nLErP9UEp7TO/s640/Sunflower+10.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once the dry, a quick trip to the laminator makes the colors come alive and they are so beautiful we can't take our eyes off of them. They are so worth the time and effort. I can't wait to get these started this week! </div>

<div align="center">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div align="center">
We are gearing up for some investigations with rocks. Everybody needs a rock, right? Well this year we are diving right in to rocks so close to Valentine's day and although these two seem like an unlikely pair, we have made a little connection.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk_rtZpSg4HSZMw8PTPsed_TKbwd0p-h69A6VS_0g2qwmyPSm6MlzIPWNfk0tuU83H9swCA6Gofu9ucgoTBfd-dUQXhvsApj8K76UeRZPRGEffhf6v9_PMbVdMb_k2o9tdwGAaLStNLGzG/s1600/Love+Me+When.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk_rtZpSg4HSZMw8PTPsed_TKbwd0p-h69A6VS_0g2qwmyPSm6MlzIPWNfk0tuU83H9swCA6Gofu9ucgoTBfd-dUQXhvsApj8K76UeRZPRGEffhf6v9_PMbVdMb_k2o9tdwGAaLStNLGzG/s1600/Love+Me+When.jpg" height="357" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I was planning for my classroom rock investigations, I was surprised to discover a few new resources to spice this Science focus up a bit. As I was searching on the Internet I discovered this<em> new</em> <em>to me</em> book and it caught my eye. I am patiently waiting for this little gem to arrive. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong><em><span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">Love You When...</span></em></strong></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we discuss rocks we describe properties of rocks by-</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Color</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Shape</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Size</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Texture</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mass</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I usually spend time on each property and allow a lot of time to observe and describe different rocks to help develop or foster sensory language. With young children this can be challenging at times. I have learned that this takes time and multiple exposures. Books help me keep this area of focus alive interesting and ongoing. I will use this book as we talk about shape but what I am really excited to try is using this book for <strong><em>shared writing</em></strong>. And considering Valentine's day is approaching, I think it will offer a good opportunity to reread the text and discuss the pattern in the book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong><em><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;">I love you when...the sun shines bright.</span></em></strong></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;">Not only does this book lend itself to shared writing, the pictures support a discussion on rock shape but this book could also be integrated into the area of art. Linda Kranz is a popular "rock artist" and her painted rocks are vividly and creatively displayed along with natural rocks and stones. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifV1WOrAtSgqpHce594KCINj62I8Wq7u9Navrk4o_X5NahJBkYO3VzeI0patM0vqwKjo85aEAGRK4PjaoZWN9kkzxlKJX0MQrxoHnIXxvUkh0-2MUXK0He00ZvuM52AN7VITRXlJtNolyQ/s1600/Heart+Stones.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifV1WOrAtSgqpHce594KCINj62I8Wq7u9Navrk4o_X5NahJBkYO3VzeI0patM0vqwKjo85aEAGRK4PjaoZWN9kkzxlKJX0MQrxoHnIXxvUkh0-2MUXK0He00ZvuM52AN7VITRXlJtNolyQ/s1600/Heart+Stones.jpg" height="398" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another treasure I have unearthed is Heart Stones. This book is a great lead in to some wonderful outdoor investigations because...<strong><em>everybody needs a rock</em></strong>! The children will be surprised to learn that heart stones are not all that rare and can be found. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong><em><span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">I wonder who will find the first heart stone?</span></em></strong></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;">With our hand lens in hand, I know we will be ready to investigate our playground rocks and search to find one or two. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1psQNmMMuV955ApqIZMfoFQLhzng-W75E6GnpfiCbAmN9Ycnj0dcmyel-gVVR0aUXtMbl7-ShOkNHsZvoI9_Bu3jZdVSESukoKT2S0x-GEzltF-mxWekxET1hXIWhJNzxqAkJCtLQ_G0E/s1600/See+A+Heart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1psQNmMMuV955ApqIZMfoFQLhzng-W75E6GnpfiCbAmN9Ycnj0dcmyel-gVVR0aUXtMbl7-ShOkNHsZvoI9_Bu3jZdVSESukoKT2S0x-GEzltF-mxWekxET1hXIWhJNzxqAkJCtLQ_G0E/s1600/See+A+Heart.jpg" height="400" width="348" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Along my journey I also discovered See A Heart Share A Heart. What speaks to me about this book is the photographic journey of hearts in nature. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong><em><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;">Can we find heart shapes in nature?</span></em></strong></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;">This would be the perfect book to read as you head outside again and explore the great outdoors. I know those budding scientist will be able to capture this experience in their notebooks. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcjdchnMBZfefHx7WR5KOGP9N609zTXNN_6Gm4BEqXa6A5B8UreRiI1dC_RcHCqhSaRlBcIpUULV3I4t8bhRUkDC4Kqu8mbcmQHei48Ncvxs8sgUB9gMBGrGkh63YBHcDlqrMg0GXKMh0D/s1600/See+a+Heart+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcjdchnMBZfefHx7WR5KOGP9N609zTXNN_6Gm4BEqXa6A5B8UreRiI1dC_RcHCqhSaRlBcIpUULV3I4t8bhRUkDC4Kqu8mbcmQHei48Ncvxs8sgUB9gMBGrGkh63YBHcDlqrMg0GXKMh0D/s1600/See+a+Heart+2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These three books should add some spice to your rock discussion and investigations. I have to admit, I am excited to give them all a try. </div>

Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, it is about a week until February 2. It is hard to believe that time has passed this quickly. So this week is the prime time to talk about the weather in class. If I could wish I would wish for some spring weather if we are not going to get any snow. I guess we will have to see what the groundhog has to say on the<strong> </strong>big day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Groundhogs-Day-HOORAY-1659260"><img alt="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Groundhogs-Day-HOORAY-1659260" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl0IUS5z_SVjeCdS2n5kEkFDvzp6UThjZP0SYPAH1lh2pkyoxMVBIpP3j8ntmYbhfW4LUVZ5VDNeml1bunkrnZRok9Gx6KPnScAsQD2dZKsGzXbF3OnTePS9qkd60_jod9F4BYt0siRAUx/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This coming week we are going to have a little fun before we hear if the groundhog sees his shadow or not. Either way, we are sure going to have a little groundhog fun before the day. </div>

Part of the fun of the week will be reading all of the books that go along with it. Much to my surprise I have found quite a few books on the subject. And when you mix these books in with books about the weather, you have a lot of books to add to any Science center. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRMhSk0Xny9OkmL4GwdeFWAdB4gUnOODyDjrkF8yvj0J6KtGax8zRkg1dtzddbHncs5UoIKxvMUWDRL87lccsJ2KLiGZfD6UvC4Y0GpUWBMoNI23f9I0SjJ81-YaU6RPDrTcHY5V2bmc9H/s1600/Groundhog+Weather+School.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRMhSk0Xny9OkmL4GwdeFWAdB4gUnOODyDjrkF8yvj0J6KtGax8zRkg1dtzddbHncs5UoIKxvMUWDRL87lccsJ2KLiGZfD6UvC4Y0GpUWBMoNI23f9I0SjJ81-YaU6RPDrTcHY5V2bmc9H/s1600/Groundhog+Weather+School.jpg" height="320" width="276" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our Science objectives include <strong><em>observing and describing the daily weather</em></strong>. We do that each day and on Wednesday we have Weather Wednesday. So, this will make a welcome little addition to spice up what we already do each day. Not only are we going to observe and describe the weather, we are going to predict, report and graph the weather too. We are making some weather headbands to get us geared up for these special reports. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3C6IbTQ6n7mjeURhcEZfLVH5brHn4T55ZjUKfB5eQNm9viuHB0gpsgs21HX7Rcpd5CL8WLK9zx0XSbefJZYWNardX8NwWHLKfoMN-WblSMYjmmrViADoSvZLZ7bDfQUQo0Uh8wY1zUS9w/s1600/Groundhog+Gets+His+Say.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3C6IbTQ6n7mjeURhcEZfLVH5brHn4T55ZjUKfB5eQNm9viuHB0gpsgs21HX7Rcpd5CL8WLK9zx0XSbefJZYWNardX8NwWHLKfoMN-WblSMYjmmrViADoSvZLZ7bDfQUQo0Uh8wY1zUS9w/s1600/Groundhog+Gets+His+Say.jpg" height="320" width="246" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We will be taking some surveys and asking...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: red;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong><em>Will we have six more weeks of winter weather?</em></strong></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">S</span><span style="color: black;">ome</span> of us want a little more winter but not all of us! I guess we will find out what kind of weather we want to see. It will give us a chance to look at the results, discuss the results of the surveys and find out what kind of weather we want the most or least. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSgmRpldnM8OgYHkCvs5VYMYMYgAvfQY38CX-33FDEB8bGk2StpaQ0t4mNHEOzP0TMsCF8Cv8NXl7BueSyVA2wkFoRw_ZrcxtdKD40cAUy8o0UtCI4_XOXpU8naBYzmQke9F6OBuJm4HPD/s1600/Gregorys+Shadow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSgmRpldnM8OgYHkCvs5VYMYMYgAvfQY38CX-33FDEB8bGk2StpaQ0t4mNHEOzP0TMsCF8Cv8NXl7BueSyVA2wkFoRw_ZrcxtdKD40cAUy8o0UtCI4_XOXpU8naBYzmQke9F6OBuJm4HPD/s1600/Gregorys+Shadow.jpg" height="320" width="244" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are going to sort <strong><em>seasonal</em></strong> things into the categories of spring and winter. My class loves sorting especially if it is a cut and paste sort that goes in our notebooks. And because they love sorting, I made them another sort to review <strong><em>living and non living</em></strong>. During this unit we also review <strong><em>basic needs</em></strong>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg879992kBX8hEnZUmBUS2QHcl7dYOG9CyBq5OU39rktcsYWI0xSKzr_a-FKb5hb9MheYbw7lXe2lTa_J2prEvo97JOc0Ds9JWLdtDJTsryCr8drxZd_cAaug1h_O8nDER6vpdKDTyP1KRE/s1600/Substitute+Groundhog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg879992kBX8hEnZUmBUS2QHcl7dYOG9CyBq5OU39rktcsYWI0xSKzr_a-FKb5hb9MheYbw7lXe2lTa_J2prEvo97JOc0Ds9JWLdtDJTsryCr8drxZd_cAaug1h_O8nDER6vpdKDTyP1KRE/s1600/Substitute+Groundhog.jpg" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids will also be excited to add illustrations to their new weather book. We are even going to do some labeling because we love labeling just about anything. We are labeling animal parts of the groundhog. When we finish reading and researching groundhogs we will be ready to write some groundhog reports. The kids are always amazed that when we put our research projects together and finally display them. All in all, I think we are ready for some groundhog fun but I couldn't leave it at that...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Because anybody knows that any good Scientist is good in math so I had to make some printables to go in our math boxes to support our current math focus. I know the kids will be excited to dig in to these printables and games. And I can't wait for some <strong><em>number talks </em></strong>with Ten Grouchy Groundhogs! </div>

Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div align="center">
I can't stop thinking about snow even though it is more like spring here today. No worries, the weather in Texas can change pretty quick so there is no need to put our coats away just yet. My class has been carefully looking at the weather reports trying to figure out if we will have recess each day. And we were beginning to question if we would even see the sun. Oh, the stories we could wtite about missing the sun shine on our faces. Sometimes we can't decide if we want to see the snow or sun but what we do know is that we want the gray skies to clear! I figures that I needed to gather a few snowy things in case we have a cold front move in and we are stuck indoors just dreaming of...<strong><em>snow</em></strong>! Because if we get it by golly we are going to celebrate! So, this is my snowy video post so that I can be ready when the cold wind blows! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Over here we have been talking about the weather. And we were wishing for snow and checking the forecast and hoping for a little miracle and when it didn't happen we had to create a little snow fun on our own. All this snow talk really had us wanting to make a snowman especially during those gloomy days of indoor recess. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ-v23mlMKStuujx7LjDqnwYdhqv2jPHGs2igi3TzkXDPasMDuFFuyxuHlkeCzdWZfxnT6sD6QapfMXUA08NI-uGHeCU2iF1mFC9Z_mjHYAneb7L50kXJUVfcjvjVJ7DPPI3dLV88Cn6Ji/s1600/Snow+Lantern+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ-v23mlMKStuujx7LjDqnwYdhqv2jPHGs2igi3TzkXDPasMDuFFuyxuHlkeCzdWZfxnT6sD6QapfMXUA08NI-uGHeCU2iF1mFC9Z_mjHYAneb7L50kXJUVfcjvjVJ7DPPI3dLV88Cn6Ji/s1600/Snow+Lantern+3.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we worked in our Weather Notebooks and recorded and graphed the weather we had a few minutes to make a snowman of our own. And the best part is that this took no time at all to prep and prepare. I was able to order these lanterns on Amazon which is my favorite online shopping store for any busy teacher. I shop, click and they deliver. I swear it could not be easier. I was able to cut most of the pieces for the eyes, nose and mouth out of construction paper scraps I had on hand. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEt33vZQxbcTtcL2f2Eh0VmzKeSw9EqjewtqOLsvWpHR7BeagBvTEI6jcc-vgRoNFFB5GjgP7Qt_mxG0Fq2SZEn6ab_6Y_DjqigVGZVkAtKxEtgUPyEFhU57p35kiCMkl0lMfpDAMWrTpy/s1600/Snow+Lantern+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEt33vZQxbcTtcL2f2Eh0VmzKeSw9EqjewtqOLsvWpHR7BeagBvTEI6jcc-vgRoNFFB5GjgP7Qt_mxG0Fq2SZEn6ab_6Y_DjqigVGZVkAtKxEtgUPyEFhU57p35kiCMkl0lMfpDAMWrTpy/s1600/Snow+Lantern+2.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids finished their work and went over to a back table and put it together independently. Even with precut pieces you could see different personalities emerge when the snowmen were finished. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLm_z_YK8MY6xNKSYH5Ucwk_sE4EVz1vXi5pC_2XEJYu4nqRk3vAe-xYMDdO-FNMkjl22FXxN-upX9xceIL5-iidhtAfKc_eNWIR6zXKfMV3B5QcDCCXCzGS7buzWEjDTdghYnPXO0d9JD/s1600/Snow+Lantern+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLm_z_YK8MY6xNKSYH5Ucwk_sE4EVz1vXi5pC_2XEJYu4nqRk3vAe-xYMDdO-FNMkjl22FXxN-upX9xceIL5-iidhtAfKc_eNWIR6zXKfMV3B5QcDCCXCzGS7buzWEjDTdghYnPXO0d9JD/s1600/Snow+Lantern+1.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With these hanging around from the ceiling it kind of made us fell like it was snowing even if it wasn't! </div>

Happy New Year Science Friends,</div>
<div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have snow on my mind. I am wishing for just one dusting of snow this year! I think snow is the best part of winter because it makes everything look so magical. I have been busy working on all things snow as the weather gets colder and we expect a little freeze. So while I am stuck inside working, I decided to link up for a little Five for Friday fun with Doodle Bugs! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now is the time that we all are thinking about the sights, sounds and scents of the season. So many different ways to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year. One of my favorite scents this time of year is peppermint. It is clean and crisp. It just smells like the holidays. Each time this year I make sure I have plenty of peppermint extract on hand to add to paint and play dough. It is clear and won't stain and it is pretty easy to find. You know, just right there by the vanilla extract in your local grocery store. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguEeIuBtFK-NJcQm377E_aqnwTJuIRPPnVq4spdSEL_KqUjOURLQN_xQCIHPYe3WUC6YMy5vCP4l9367bPredR8eFJYaCs_o_Fqw-L3CwlGLHN0U970yXeXY3uwVx3w0u54DjkszOV1rtB/s1600/Cookie+Cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguEeIuBtFK-NJcQm377E_aqnwTJuIRPPnVq4spdSEL_KqUjOURLQN_xQCIHPYe3WUC6YMy5vCP4l9367bPredR8eFJYaCs_o_Fqw-L3CwlGLHN0U970yXeXY3uwVx3w0u54DjkszOV1rtB/s1600/Cookie+Cutters.jpg" height="350" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just a few drops will transform some dough into a sensory experience sure to get anyone ready to start talking about this fun experience. What I love is that this time of year you could use any color of dough. I have a stockpile of dough that I am ready to use now and toss when we are finished! And what a great way to set the stage for describing properties of objects?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><em>Who knew Science could be seasonal and fun?</em></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is such an easy way to grab a quick checklist, engage in a little sensory language and check those items off the assessment list. Can you imagine the words used to describe the dough? What will the scent remind us of? What about the opportunities for comparative language? It's not so hard to think of a little twist to make Science a little seasonal and get our goals accomplished too! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Can-Describe-Properties-Of-An-Object-901175">If you need a little help with describing properties click here for a freebie!</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have fun investigating!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have been working on newsletter templates since the summer and have been using them for a lot of different reasons for parent communication this year already. I did not know how much time it would really save me by having a template to organize my thoughts but it really has. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">These have been a huge <strong><em>time saver</em></strong> for me.</span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The biggest reason they have saved time for me is because before I had a simple template, I would spend a lot of time formatting and decorating the newsletter. Now my time is spent on the <strong><em>content of the newsletter</em></strong>. Another reason this has been so helpful for me is because the<strong><em> space it limited</em></strong> and because of that<strong><em> my message is more focused</em></strong> on the <u>content</u> rather than the fluff. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Editable-Weekly-Newsletter-TemplateEdit-Print-and-Go-1341008"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Editable-Weekly-Newsletter-TemplateEdit-Print-and-Go-1341008" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP-RpQsWzhU-twJe_blQ_JRhYC1xtCMRkrOHV0q3kvtEjHRA7uvbF6ePEk3BL07tM79gvez-sfFJkUkEopRqRxDYznTtZq9_c9TUzKNZdOiluTjuNeUiGdprLXqLClTbN_VRAQvB3UEQ8s/s1600/Science+Newsletter+Edited+Page+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until now, I have not had a reason to use page two of the newsletter. That is simply because I have not sent any Science news home this year and I had a little more to say. I can easily print this and copy on the back of page one for a two sided letter. If I want to send these as attachments I can send both of them as well. What my experience has taught me is that if I need more space than a front and back newsletter provides, then I need to probably communicate...<strong><em>more often</em></strong>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em><span style="font-size: x-large;">I want the message short, simple and to the point because </span></em><em><span style="font-size: x-large;">I want the reader to read it and act on it!</span></em> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Editable-Weekly-Newsletter-TemplateEdit-Print-and-Go-1341008"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Editable-Weekly-Newsletter-TemplateEdit-Print-and-Go-1341008" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyxCNzPVlJLB-F4wCdJvFoHxYRq17KuyDPiJHgB7ItB0qGyKfPjRg2ibfa46qmZTCUX2K0Cb8Ung9psMMqN-bKk2mllFc7scMSmtXkBORBfDaWctFXkltTONR0u_G4f2doxhQbk41CD06E/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The editable weekly newsletter templates are each the same format and have been changed using seasonal graphics because I didn't want to get lost in learning what I could and could not do within multiple different templates because that would defeat the purpose. The purpose is direct and to the point, frequent communication with the families that I serve. When I was goal setting this summer, more frequent and relevant parent communication was on the top of my goal list. And the main reason I didn't do enough of it last year was largely due to feeling like I did not have enough...<strong><em>time</em></strong>. I had to simplify the process so that communicating with parents was less time consuming for me and the template did just that. The seasonal graphics just made me want to send newsletters...more. All in all, this has helped me work towards reaching my goal of more frequent communication and bought me some time to focus on something else! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, if you are like me and need to take a <strong><em>bite</em></strong> out of parent communication just click on the images above. Until then, have fun investigating! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy B2S sale shopping! I just love this time each and every year. And after all the sales are final and you are in our room the serious work begins...teaching. So many things to think about and consider before you dive right in and teach. And you know no matter the subject, listening is crucial. It has to be taught and expectations have to be set for the year ahead. It doesn't have to be hard or difficult but it as to be taught. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguce42l62lqVDNN2RxKV9wBlcpakWy52Z_HihT9C-5GX8ZwmzhFAoCuwxQ0nMsQfA37D_r8jqYPpt2_tA6idlXIbLpBPuiwfhOrsa77m848lUKiFESWdsZ4CKnwKJSnGzxgoASN8KCNH2o/s1600/Listen+and+Learn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguce42l62lqVDNN2RxKV9wBlcpakWy52Z_HihT9C-5GX8ZwmzhFAoCuwxQ0nMsQfA37D_r8jqYPpt2_tA6idlXIbLpBPuiwfhOrsa77m848lUKiFESWdsZ4CKnwKJSnGzxgoASN8KCNH2o/s1600/Listen+and+Learn.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this book to go along with my discussion on listening. I put this to good use a time or two last year. With a lot of modeling and role playing, it helped to set the stage for our discussions and provided an atmosphere where we could learn, participate and respect each other. I made some printable posters that I could hang in the area where we have our discussions and that is where it stays for the entire year. When needed, I simply point to he poster as a reminder. If I need to use it for a lesson when new students arrive, I can. If you are interested in your own printables jut click on the image below!</div>

<div align="center">
Hey Science friends,</div>
<div align="center">
I am so excited to finally finish my I Can Be A Scientist~Learning About Living Things. In the previous years my students have really enjoyed slide presentations mainly because of the images. I don't blame them because I do to. Real images of living and non living things in our world can be breathtaking. As I have spent the summer camping in state parks in Texas, I am amazed at the beauty of nature that often we simply ignore. But when you have time to really look around there are beautiful shapes, colors and textures all around us but sometimes we are just too busy to notice. Considering I have spent the summer really observing living and nonliving things I was really excited to work on this project. </div>
<div align="center">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Is-It-Living-Or-Nonliving-Powerpoint-Presentation-And-Printables-1343415"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Is-It-Living-Or-Nonliving-Powerpoint-Presentation-And-Printables-1343415" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQGN_Vft7sXxZMIJA6UuIR6Rp0OQ3j2X9RrvJKKUOhBWPp15FTHIcLRvpSYZd_D_wmP3YvyPrIPa6yMIdafNT6BdPFgIsU3eA9w8THJheecvdysp4yxNKl6nf0FiWDlWt5lUL0t3knxbmL/s1600/Slide4.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This PowerPoint Presentation is full of slides and guided questions to help aid in discussions of living and nonliving and basic needs. When I am teaching Science, I love to have real life images and books that support what we are learning but that has been a challenge to find over the years. And because of that, I began to collect images. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Is-It-Living-Or-Nonliving-Powerpoint-Presentation-And-Printables-1343415"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Is-It-Living-Or-Nonliving-Powerpoint-Presentation-And-Printables-1343415" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHRU_nbW4gCWp-ZwgiqEAso-bZdCqEST9gsiSFV4BBKRL8iPDocRXiNE_BJf1bF7w0SI-f1HrA-Tlj71O_m_uIt1sOKxBx6ht9HqkdEDBbPtcMi3kQqrOzMd9KyzbRfIIv69-RKpSdE7Dr/s1600/Slide17.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The presentation has several rounds of high quality images that will go along with what we are learning and discussing in class. The guided questions are there to help scaffold the learning of new concepts. After a few rounds, the children are encouraged to justify their responses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><em><strong>I know a plant is living because...</strong></em></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC2I1mPd0aDs_t1BjzdTh20xSES7kXRCNYlGMsPPc4coEAi2vUOMFxNJlCWHhl2VAZLsZPFmds2Dyd_S5lVSL1CkuCijKn4Woopg8XTGfcn4z0WUSZJBnRFPjxZmPKOHoVZ1DiY7tlLxsm/s1600/Slide109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC2I1mPd0aDs_t1BjzdTh20xSES7kXRCNYlGMsPPc4coEAi2vUOMFxNJlCWHhl2VAZLsZPFmds2Dyd_S5lVSL1CkuCijKn4Woopg8XTGfcn4z0WUSZJBnRFPjxZmPKOHoVZ1DiY7tlLxsm/s1600/Slide109.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we have spent three days of learning, discussing and notebooking about living and nonliving things and basic needs we move on to sorts. These can be printed, laminated and stored in Science centers or take home bags. We discuss and sort. When the children are using these independently or in small groups I get a chance to observe and listen and make note of any misconceptions. So while they are busy, I am busy assessing as I roam around. It is pretty simple. To conclude the unit I have enclosed printables that the children will use to record their thinking about living and nonliving things and basic needs. These printables serve as their documentation of learning. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Is-It-Living-Or-Nonliving-Powerpoint-Presentation-And-Printables-1343415"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Is-It-Living-Or-Nonliving-Powerpoint-Presentation-And-Printables-1343415" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhkYmc3_aD-ZQcDhM4SFh5pnPOznt3ve_LlQ2ged4VEx79m88c0J4wtYgeORpNtwvhw5zC0Vyc89q2XcBIRLr4cvQeMbxDgOcZMj7mSH8K-ilTY3oGumVfKo1PLAxlEdPPMvgGyx4qX8KW/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And if you are anything like me and you love the ease of PowerPoint, you can add, delete or multiply slides. You can create more rounds of each series of slides because the kids will always ask for another round. If you need more information just click on the images above! Have fun investigating friends! </div>

Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div align="center">
I know it is silly but I still love school supply shopping. Let's be honest, a good school supply deal actually only comes around once a year and it is hard for a teacher not to get excited. And I sure love a sneak a peak add to help me plan for my trip and get all organized so I can get my game face on and hit the stores! This coming week Office Max has poly snap envelopes on sale for a quarter each. I have to admit I got a little excited about this deal. Friends, think of the possibilities! These are way better than baggies to store stuff in. Think of the games and pieces that can go in these little gems and a snap to keep it all together. And what about the color coding possibilities too? It makes me want to go and grab these up right now. The Office Max says that there is a limit of three. But I have always had 100% luck with showing my badge and getting 25 for the same price. I have even called ahead and talked to the manager before my shopping trip just to make sure I was not disappointed when I got there. Honestly to me these are worth the effort. I have no idea why I never thought of these before. I guess putting them in a B2S add helped to get my mind going in the right direction. What ideas do you have for them? </div>

You know I am crazy about good old Sid. And I was kind of a little bit excited to get a notification that Sid has a new release scheduled for today. If I don't already have all the DVD's I have to be getting pretty darn close to collecting them all. If you are a Science lover like me I am sure you have fallen in love with this series. Hey Science Friends,</div>
<div align="center">
Like most teachers summer gives us a time to reflect on the past year and the opportunity to plan for a new year ahead. It is a good time to take what worked and make it even better or just scrap the bad and start over. One of the things that I liked in my classroom this year was my seasonal timeline. I started off the year with class pictures. It kept us on track with birthdays during the year. But what I didn't like was that some seasons were a little more crowded than others leaving less room to add pictures or information for that specific time of year. I am already thinking of ways to make it work and work better. I have to admit our favorite part of the timeline were the pictures but other important events happen in the year and room needs to be saved for those events. A timeline is a good place to post seasonal science observations like a tree changing throughout the seasons and those events that take place within each season. I think with a little adjustment our timeline just might make the cut and appear again this coming year! </div>
