Rocks!

We are working in the Science Lab gearing up for some fun rock investigations. I wanted to share with you the rocks I found. I spotted these on a weekend trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards. I knew these would be the perfect addition to our rock investigations. I found these in a gift shop for around ten dollars a bag. Teachers have also told me that these can also be found at gift shops in local amusement parks. All in all, these were perfect because there was a wide variety, unique shapes and interesting patterns when you look close enough. I was thrilled that I would not have to get on the internet and order rocks and pay shipping. Even though I am thrilled to add these to my collection I am curious to know if anyone else knows where you can find interesting rocks to purchase?

  1. Romancing the Stone (a store in the mall) has little felt bags that you can fill with rocks like these - however many you can fit for about $5 if I remember correctly. Check here to see if there's one near you: http://www.earthboundtrading.com/index.php?id=3
I am sooo tempted to buy a rock tumbler for our science center! My kiddos love to bring in rocks that they find at home and on the playground. I have one student who seems to be a fossil magnet!

  2. My mom has a rock tumbler that she inherited from my grandfather, and I am just waiting to get a chance to drive down (an hour away) and go get it! I can't wait! It's interesting that you would post on that just now!
But apparently, I will have to purchase the rocks to put in it, and it is going to take about four months to get them nice and shiny. Plus, it is NOISY, so I am going to have to put the tumbler in a closet somewhere- I'm thinking I'll put it in our kiln room at school. The kiln is pretty noisy and doesn't seem to bother anyone, so hopefully they won't notice the rock tumbler!
Watch out for cheap rock tumblers. We had one, and it barely worked. We threw it out, because it was so bad.
Here is a link to a place in Orange County, CA, that sells rocks to tumble. I suppose that they also sell polished rocks, too...
