My Five Senses Reports!

Welcome Science Friends,
We have had a great week learning about our senses as tools for investigation. I think that our Science Notebooks just might be our favorite tools in science so far. Once the labels were put on our notebooks and safety contracts were signed and glued inside, I think we all felt like official scientists just ready for our first hands-on investigation.
We were looking forward to the end of the week because we knew that on Friday we would be investigating bubblegum, Not only were we going to be able to practice safe investigations but we were able to use all of our senses to investigate bubblegum.
I was surprised at how well everyone listened as I walked through the process of recording our findings for the first time. I thought it might be a struggle considering everyone knew we were going to really investigate bubblegum with all of our senses. To my surprise, the children were listening and answering questions as I went through it step by step. We recorded what our bubblegum looked like, smelled like, tasted like, felt like and sounded like. We learned how scientists "waft" a scent safely and came up with some pretty good descriptions of what our bubblegum smelled like. And we were not sure if our bubblegum would actually taste like what we thought.
I did have to help with the recordings and thought everyone did a great job for the first time out and for so early in the year. As we ended the day the children were excited and pretty quiet with gum in their mouth! We are all looking forward to more investigations in the coming weeks.

Happy Game Day Science Friends,
So exciting all the sales going around! So, I thought I would throw one too but before I did I had to add a little something extra to my My five Senses Reports. I added a few pages to include a Rock Report because as we kick off rocks in class, I wanted to have a report ready to go. It's a perfect addition for describing properties of objects and oral language development.

Run, Run, Run UPDATE Gingerbread Fun!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Five-Senses-Reports-856566
Hey Science Friends,
Run, run, run as fast as you can! Just had to tell you that if you previously purchased the My five Senses Reports... It has been updated to include THE Gingerbread Man Report! So run, run, run and re download the update and get to investigating Science friends! So excited that I had a request for this today and I couldn't have been happier to make this addition because it gives us yet another opportunity to investigate, write and communicate like scientists. He should have been there all along but now he is in place and ready to go!
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Five-Senses-Reports-856566
Now I am all ready to run out and grab some Little Debbie Gingerbread Men and have a little bit of Science fun of my own. I am sure this will give us a good reason to get out those hand lenses and investigate like the true Scientists that we have come to be!
And another reason to read a few more gingerbread books because we need the proper tools to investigate, right?
For more information just click on the first two images.
This download includes four investigations using objects-popcorn, bubble gum, apples and pumpkins. All investigations are based on the same format and designed to promote independent investigations for young children. The first investigation is completed as a class and the other investigations may be used independently. This is a print and go science resource that is easy to prepare and appropriate for kindergarten or first grade students. The objectives come from National Science Standards and help to develop children using their senses as tools to investigate and describe the properties of objects. Children will describe objects by shape, size, mass, texture and color. Each investigation reviews safety for investigating with the senses. Once the activities are complete you will have a report that children can share as they learn to communicate like scientists!
UPDATE: Gingerbread Report Added!
Run, run, run as fast as you can.

My Five Senses Reports!

Hey Science Friends,
WHEW! It's been a busy few weeks around here. I am sure you can relate. This is always such a fun time of the year in Science...the beginning. You have the chance to set the stage for those budding little Scientists. And throughout the year you have the chance to develop the investigative skills and sensory language of those little Scientists too! Many of us start the year off with safety and then move on to My Five Senses. For us, we teach My Five Senses as tools to learn how to describe the properties of objects just like a real Scientist!
We learn to describe objects by:
shape
size
mass
texture
color
And we have lots of fun doing it too! And once you learn how to do it, you can apply this to just about anything!
What about investigating the properties of:
popcorn
bubble gum
apples
pumpkins
Yep, you can use your senses as tools and learn how to describe the properties of objects and foster independent, hands-on investigating too! What in the world is not to love?
And after all of that observing and describing the properties of objects what about sharing that with others? Yep, just like real scientists! What a way to meet those Science Standards with some true observing, describing, recording and communicating...just like real Scientists! If you are a true Scientist at heart or you aspire to be that Science teacher that you always wanted to be, this might help get your feet wet and ease you into that new role. I think this IS the year. If you are like me, you probably have searched high and low to find Science resources for young children but have come up empty handed. I did too. So, I decided to create My Five Senses Reports.

With Print & Go Science Resources it doesn't even have to be hard! If you would like to join us in our investigating fun just click on the images above for more information!

Field Investigations!

Hey Science Friends,
At my school we are so lucky to be a part of Real School Gardens. We were able to participate in a visit from Real School Gardens this week. As part of our Science Objectives for our state we are required to have field investigations for a large majority of our Science time. Having a school garden really helps to make those investigations meaningful and interesting.

This visit came at the perfect time for my class. We have talked so much about investigating with My Five Senses. We were able to discuss Properties of Matter and use some wonderful sensory language as we worked our way through the garden. We were all amazed at how many different textures we were able to feel. And you know we had to touch everything...

So, off we went investigating...

We even stopped for a minute to listen...

We were able to observe quite a few butterflies around the butterfly bushes. They stayed around us for a while and we were able to watch them and see them up close.

We were able to see bees working in the bushes too!

We found some interesting textures and used some great sensory language to describe what we could feel.

 We discovered living things.

And non living things.

And even some living things living in non living things, oh my!

And we finally learned what these are... This is where the earthworms will come up for air the next time it rains. And we are sure going to be looking for that!

We collected some interesting things. And wondered what some of them were.

Some collections were small.

And some were strange.

And on our last trip around the garden we started to notice something...

So we had to talk about it and problem solve.

We made a plan and put our plan into action!

And we learned that we can solve problems...even big problems.

And then we were ready...to play!

Texture Tool Freebies!

Hey Science Friends,

I have been searching high and low for something to help my children learn to describe the properties of objects with some emphasis on texture. I finally came up with something that serves as a tool, is easy to make and helps young children describe an object by texture. I created the printable above so that I could print, cut and laminate a copy to glue on both side of a fly swatter. As a class we will collect small items that we will glue to each finger and we will label it according to the texture. We will make several and all of these will have different textures on them. I am planning on making several of these so that my Science Teams have a texture tool to use at each table when investigating. I hope we can find enough items to make at least four texture tools. When we finish making them I will post them here. If you would like to make your own texture tool just click on the image above and grab your copy and get ready to start investigating!

My Five Senses Safety Rules!

Hey Science Friends,
We are gearing up for a year of Science Investigations and having a lot of discussion about safety. These My Five Senses Safety Rules were inspired by my class as we were creating an anchor chart about safety. I have made a small version so we could keep in our Science Center and keep posted all year as we investigate. As with any chart we make in class, it might be modified and changed throughout the year as we gain new understandings or discover something we might not have included previously. If you need a copy to jump start your Safety discussions please click on the image and grab yours today! And have fun investigating!

My Five Senses!

Hello Science Friends,
I really never intended for it to take so long for me to post at the beginning of the year. I have been super busy and I have had my share of technology issues. I wanted to stop by and thank you for hanging in there with me. I am excited about getting back into the regular routine and talking about Science! We are just about to gear up for a unit on My Five Senses. I think this unit is one of my favorites. In my stores this has been my most popular item so I guess everyone loves My five Senses too!

As I was preparing for Science this year I was thinking about the My Five Senses unit and I still had a few items on my own wish list for this unit. I finally decided to create the items that I was always on the hunt for. I have updated this file to include these new items:

I Can Be A Scientist Teacher Big Book Color Version
I Can Be A Super Scientist Notebook/Journal Cover and Inserts
Roll A Sense Game
My Five Senses Song/Poem
I Can Be A Scientist Labeled Poster Boy/Girl
Label the Super Scientist Boy/Girl Blacklines
My Five Senses Blackline Reader

These were just a few of the things I wished I had in the past. I am super excited about the edition of the small blackline books that will just be perfect for book boxes or Science folders. I am also excited about the I Can Be A Scientist Colored Teacher Big Book that I am going to use when talking about each sense and I will add a copy to our library. And I am jumping for joy over the I Can Be A Super Scientist Notebook/Journal Cover and Inserts that is literally a click, print and staple away from a My Five Senses Notebook or Journal for each child in your Science Class.

And I am excited to get investigating with the Investigation Mats that were already included in the original download. I am getting excited to see some budding young Scientists this year. I would love to include more so if you have an idea that I can include I hope you email me and let me know. But make sure that if you purchased this from TeacherspayTeachers that you look for your notification to redownload the new copy so you get all the new stuff because you will just squeal when you see the graphics for these!

And usually when we are working on something in class it is the children who usually spark me to add something new to each unit. If I add something I will send you notification through the store and I will post it here. I have had so many emails about Science with young children. I am excited to be able to share that with you here this year!

If you purchased this item from Teachers Notebook I will notify you of the update...I am unable to update that file right now and I have emailed them for help! I appreciate your understanding!
