Growing Brains!

Just found this yesterday! I have been hunting around for this since the summer. These are perfect for Kindergarten Scientists to observe and record in their Science Notebooks. I found this little gem at Dollar Tree.

Pets In The Classroom!

I am excited to be able to get some classroom pets today. I have been planning and thinking about this for a while and this video and the others in this series really gave me tons of information about Hermit Crabs in the classroom.

Science In The Classroom

Welcome friends! I am so excited that you have joined me on this new adventure exploring Science within a Kindergarten classroom. Before we get deep into our Color Mixing Kits, I wanted to let you know that Steve Spangler Science has generously donated the Color Mixing Kit featured on this blog in exchange for blogging about our classroom experiences. I was thrilled to have this opportunity and share this fun with another classroom and anyone interested in learning more about Science with young children. In working with my contact at Steve Spangler Science, I really enjoyed making my kit selection and having someone discuss the possibilities within the kit. I believe this is a wonderful kit for young learners and it is developmentally appropriate. I have spent countless hours over the years searching and looking for good quality information and experiments for young children to teach Science. Usually my searches have lead me to writing and creating my own because I have not found developmentally appropriate activities. As we work through this Color Mixing Kit, it is important to understand that it is not my goal to have children know how to mix different combinations of colors. The color Mixing Kit is my vehicle to teach a developing child Scientific investigation and reasoning, demonstrate science tools and teach safe practices, to promote communication and problem solving. Additionally, this kit clearly promotes hands-on, inquiry based instruction in an Early Childhood classroom. And finally, these experiments offer multiple opportunities for Science Notebooking in Kindergarten.

Frogs!

Mrs. Unger sent me this photo of her class frogs. We have two frogs as well. We have Jumper and Bumper in our class. We have spent a lot of time observing these frogs and talking about them. Right now they are awaiting a new home as our Science Center is getting a face lift. Visit Mrs. Unger's class blog for more great information.
Color Chaos!

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2–The students at Hughes Elementary School have a new substitute principal, Mr. Greystone. He has lots and lots of rules, of the “NO” and “DON'T” variety. Budding illustrator Colin brings his new giant box of crayons to school and he and his friends try them out on the new cafeteria white board. When Mr. Greystone sees the kids' contributions, he is furious and bans all art supplies and tosses the crayons into the trash. A special guest illustrator is alarmed by the grayness surrounding the children. Meanwhile, the art supplies plan a rebellion, making a color wheel that whirls out of the bin, bonking Mr. Greystone “silly.” The dull principal then sees the error of his ways and finally realizes that “color matters.” Reed's mixed-media illustrations are fabulous examples of color, movement, and humor.
