Science Book Picks!

Hello Science Friends,

We are still having some penguin fun in the lab and we will post those pictures soon! I wanted to post the book picks for Earth materials because for many of us this unit is coming up and for so many teachers resources in this area of Science is very limited. I saw the book Dirt: The Scoop on Soil earlier this year and ordered it so I could decide if it was a good fit for our objectives and age appropriate. I got the book and really liked it. I think it is a good match for learning about Earth materials and I like the way it shows some simple investigations. I like how it addresses the Science of soil in an appropriate format that even young children can understand. Because I think the soil book is such a good fit for our needs, I have decided to order the rock and water book too. If you have read these books drop me a line and tell me what you think!

 

Notebooking!

This has been a good year for Science Notebooking. I think I worked all the kinks out of it last year and just enjoyed it. I am always on the hunt for different things to put in our notebooks. In math we are working on measurement and part of that study includes temperature. Last month I was preparing for measurement for a training and my partner reminded me of some great resources that I blogged about on my other blog. 

The Math Learning Center has some really great stuff. I found these cards there. The picture here shows the cards printed in black and white. I like these printed in color better. I laminate these cards and put magnets on the back and use them as visuals when I am talking to my class. When I use them for notebooking I just copy them on copy paper for each child. 

Penguins!

I was searching around for some penguin fun and I came across some free resources. I wanted to share them with you just in case you have never found these. 

Call Me Mrs. Popper!

With so much snow business going on my kids now refer to me as Mrs. Popper! In our sand and water table we have one half of a package of the Snocube package of SnoWonder. I have a very large sand and water table. Right now snow is on sale and shipping is free and FAST! If you are considering snow in the classroom you should give SnoWonder a try. My kids say I am the best teacher ever for making it snow in Kindergarten. My shipment came in three days! This would be perfect to have on hand for a rainy day! 

 

Making Snow!

We have been busy making batches and batches of snow. I think we have come up with our own secret formula recipe for the snow consistency that we like best. Currently we have an entire sand/water table filled with snow and it is hard to take our hands out of there. I have to say this is a perfect product to use for Science in Kindergarten and on a rainy day. 

We have been able to integrate some Math into the snow table while we have been discussing capacity. This is perfect for some hands on capacity lessons. We usually follow most math activities with some recording but it has been difficult to get our hands out of the snow so we will try to record our discoveries tomorrow.
