Notebooking!

This has been a good year for Science Notebooking. I think I worked all the kinks out of it last year and just enjoyed it. I am always on the hunt for different things to put in our notebooks. In math we are working on measurement and part of that study includes temperature. Last month I was preparing for measurement for a training and my partner reminded me of some great resources that I blogged about on my other blog.
The Math Learning Center has some really great stuff. I found these cards there. The picture here shows the cards printed in black and white. I like these printed in color better. I laminate these cards and put magnets on the back and use them as visuals when I am talking to my class. When I use them for notebooking I just copy them on copy paper for each child.

Frosty Returns!

What are we learning? We are learning to observe, record and discuss how materials can be changed by heating and cooling. We started our Frosty off with water and put him in the freezer. We predicted what would happen to the water. We took Frosty out of the freezer and took a good look at him. We observed, described and discussed what we saw. We kept a record of the words we used to describe Frosty.
Hard
Cold
Smooth
Shiny
Cloudy
Sparkly
Wet
As I held the Frosty in the pan we noticed Frosty was dripping on the floor. We wanted to know why. We talked about the temperature in the freezer compared to the temperature in the room. We were curious to see the temperature of the ice so we added a thermometer. We predicted which part of Frosty would melt first. As Frosty melted we observed the changes and recorded our findings in our Science Notebooks.
